A Niles man died in a Thursday accident on the Indiana Toll Road.
John Arthur Rodgers, 30, was driving east on Interstate 80 about 9:20 a.m. when he struck a guardrail on the right side of the road, according to a report from the Toll Road post of the Indiana State Police.
The 1980 Ford tow truck he was driving flipped near where the Toll Road crosses the St. Joseph River in South Bend, trapping Rodgers inside, the report said. He suffered blunt force trauma to his head and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rodgers may have been slowing as he approached a semi-trailer that was jack-knifed on the highway, the report said.
Trooper Brad Kaizer said eastbound traffic was diverted from the highway at the U.S. 31 exit.
Eastbound vehicles initially backed up to the Portage Road crossing.
Other area law enforcement agencies kept busy Thursday morning, too, as they collected information at many crash scenes.
Capt. John Williams said South Bend police officers responded to 30 accidents after 6 a.m. Thursday. One person was injured. The majority of the crashes were between 6 and 9 a.m. as people traveled to work, he said.
"People think they can still drive the way they do when the pavement is dry," Williams said.
St. Joseph County Police officers responded to 18 crashes and collisions between midnight and 11 a.m. Thursday, spokeswoman Jaimee Thirion said.
Six of the crashes were on the St. Joseph Valley Parkway, and motorists reported ice on the road, she said.
"It's the first snowfall of the season and people just forget to use their heads and go too fast," Thirion said. "People aren't giving themselves enough time."
Mishawaka police officers responded to four accidents by midday. All were minor, without injuries, caused mostly by motorists driving too fast for road conditions, according to police reports.
Indiana State Police Bremen Post officers took reports for seven property damage crashes by 11 a.m. and one vehicle that slid off the road, spokeswoman Julie Keeling said.
Keeling said none of the crashes or collisions were major and no one was injured. Most of the crashes resulted from motorists who didn't account for road conditions, she said.

WSBT) Michianas first snow of the season may be to blame for an accident on the Indiana Toll Road that left one man dead.
It happened around 9:30am Thursday in the eastbound lanes just west of the South Bend - Notre Dame exit.
Investigators say 30-year-old John Rodgers of Niles was responding to a jack-knifed tractor trailer when his tow truck slid off the road and into a guard rail. The truck flipped over, trapping Rodgers inside. He died at the scene.
Police closed the eastbound lanes of the Toll Road for several hours while clearing the accidents. No one else was seriously injured
