TOWN OF BURKE -- A tractor-trailer plowed into a truck stop restaurant on U.S. Highway 51, just off Interstate 90-94, on Saturday afternoon.
The driver, who is not being identified pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Two others were injured. A witness said the driver may have had a heart atttack, but the cause of death could not be confirmed.
The semi-truck was headed southbound on 51 at about 4:45 p.m., when it veered off the road to the right, crossed a ditch, and careened into the truck stop parking lot, according to Dane County Sherriff's Sgt. Tom Sankey. The semi smashed into a row of parked vehicles, dragging two of them across the lot and into the Country Pride restaurant at the Madison Travel Center. The two cars were completely demolished.
Sankey said a passenger in the semi was taken to the hospital, as was a woman whose car was one of three others struck in the parking lot. Sankey said both of those two individuals suffered only minor injuries.
The truck stop was evacuated after the accident, and the power lines and gas lines to the affected area were cut. But general manager Jerry Mason expected the entire truck stop, including the restaurant, to be back in business by midnight on Saturday.
