Man injured in collision with logger
by John Sparrow

Homeowner Nick Fish was using a weed eater in his yard Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 2, at about 2 p.m., when a traffic accident occurred in front of his house. He witnessed a glancing collision between a log truck owned by Bill Galliardi of Elbe, and a Nissan Pathfinder pickupat the intersection of SR161 and Blau Rd.

Witnesses, including Fish, say that the red Nissan turned in front of the oncoming log truck driven by Hank Callaham of Tacoma. Callaham told investigators that the pickup had waited for three other cars to pass before it pulled out into the southbound lane of travel.

I saw him come out into my lane and started heading for the ditch, but he kept coming on and I couldnt avoid him, said the truck driver at the scene. The logging truck continued off the roadway into the ditch facing south. Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the accident and had to be removed by tow truck.

The logging truck, which was empty at the time, struck the front of the Nissan pickup. The collision sent the smaller vehicle spinning completely around in a full circle on the rain slick highway. As the pickup spun, it collided with a white Kia sedan.

The drivers of all three vehicles were examined at the scene by Pierce County Fire Department personnel. The driver of the pickup was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for further treatment.

Sleepy Driver Rolls Semi On Interstate 84

Trailer, Fuel Tanks Must Be Emptied Before Righting Rig

TROUTDALE, Ore. -- The driver of a semi truck that flipped Friday morning on Interstate 84 admitted to police that he fell asleep at the wheel.

The westbound truck overturned about 4:15 a.m. near Rooster Rock State Park.

David Damm, 41, told police that he was trucking produce and meat when he drifted off. The rig veered onto the shoulder, hit the guardrail and tipped. Damm was not injured but was cited for failing to stay in his lane.

The trailer and fuel tanks had to be emptied before the truck could be righted and removed. At noon, the truck remained next to the roadway but traffic was moving through.
