The Nut Times!

The Recovery Nut Times

After a long

Hiatus, the nut times and The Count are back, this edition is a bit short but its 11pm and I need to get to bed. I am happy to say that my business, Maurer services, is getting bigger and busier as we speak! In fact one of my guys is towing a TT now! As with all start up businesses, it is very slow and often painfully expensive. I am making cold calls like crazy and I have made progress and have learned a lot of lessons along the way at the same time. I have several trucking companies that have added me to their list of venders but on the other side of the coin, for every vender that I list, I have 10 that tell me I am listed but when I call up for a follow up a month latter they have never heard of me and I am not in their system. I have also learned who I can and cant trust. I got a call from a potential new-big customer for an air problem on a trailer. my ETA to his location would have been over 2 hours so I called up A Excellence towing, yes the same guys that crashed into the ambulance a few months back, asked if they could take care of it for me and bill me and I would pay them immediately, that way they get paid and my customer is happy with a fixed truck fast. A Excellence was very nice and told me they would bill me and they fixed the truck. A few days latter I called them and they took it upon them selves to bill the customer and did a complete 180 from what they told me on the phone. They bad mouthed me to the customer and now I lost a customer. What happened to being decent to one and other? What happened to taking care of fellow towers. You know. Because I am starting out, I cant handle everything, I do my best but I need to out source somethings. I probably would have given them a bunch of business. I also called the owner a few times and can you believe it, he wont call me back! I dont understand. But I learned the hard way to learn who you can trust. (BTW, A Excellence did not realize I run this web site aside from Maurer Services. Just incase you were thinking retaliation for posting the pics from the crash, but remember, I spent a lot of time blotting out the name and hiding the identity of the towing company involved.)

Sorry, I am still a bit p/o.

I am still working my Tollway Gig and I have gotten the HELP truck a few times so things are looking up! Who knows, maybe one day I will have it full time.

I also got a lot of comments that I dont update enough, it takes a long time to prepare the pics and post them, this update took close to 2 -3 hours, actually probably more than that. But I will try, the other problem is I have not been to many recoveries lately so I have not had too many pics. Please send me your pics any time and I will be glad to post them

The Count is back!!!

At TowFest I got Lots of compliments from people about Recoverynut and how much they like it. I also go a few people asking me where "The Count" went, and comments about how much they like it, so I brought it back. I dont want to go into the details but 2 factors were behind "the counts" absence. 1 was I was really unhappy that i was not getting any updates at all from any towing companies at help keep it acurate, and I know i miss stuff, also the companies I was getting updates from were unfairly swaying the count because if company A is informing me that he did 16 recoveries but company B did 25 and does not tell me, than company B looks bad even though I know that company B is doing a lot more than he is letting on- and company B- you know who you are! and i will let you figure out who company A is. The second reason is I felt I was giving credit to certin companies that did not deserve it. Any way, I will no longer give credit for recoveries, unless I know about it at the time of the recovery. Please call me 24 hours a day and let me know if you get a recovery or if you see one happening. I thought it only fair to start where I left off on 2/19/06 and start the adding starting 9/10/06 so here is the count with a few added since 9/10.

big fire at NorthShore Towing in Evenston Illinois, Fortunately, no one was seriously injures, 1 broken ankle. This happened in an area of the yard were there was all junk cars getting ready for scrap. The loss was big, but was in an area, that did not effect impounds, customer, employees or company cars, just junk- so that a good thing and the building was spared also. Good luck to Northshore, it defiantly could have been a lot worse!

Tow Truck Driver Hero!

From: Tow truck driver rescues youths from car wreck

Don Affleck couldn't sleep and was watching TV about 3:30 a.m. Saturday when he heard a loud crash.

"It sounded like a large tree had fallen over in my yard," he said. "I thought 'That big, dead tree that I've got to cut down finally just fell over.' "

But he quickly decided it could be something else, perhaps one of the frequent car crashes that happen near his West Saanich Road home, to the south of Durrance Lake Road.

"We sit here and listen to these accidents -- there's been a number of them since we moved in here in the last 3 1/2 or four years, and it is just a crazy stretch of road."

Affleck woke his wife, and told her he had heard something and was going to take a look outside. Both grabbed flashlights and went to investigate.

"We have flashlights already charged because it happens so often," Affleck said.

Once outside, his wife, Michele Blashko, picked up the sounds of screaming, so Affleck jumped into his truck to scout the roadside. "I took off like a shot and went up to the corner looking for signs of an accident. There were no skid marks, no debris, nothing."

Michele was following on foot and the couple eventually managed to trace the voices to a roadside water-storage pond.

"We got the flashlights in there and all you could see were just two fellows' heads sticking up over the edge of a bank screaming for help," Affleck said. "It was so pitch-black that they couldn't see anything. All they knew is that they were in water and they were clinging to the side of this bank."

The pair, a 19-year-old driver and his passenger, had escaped from a sinking Chrysler Intrepid through a partially open driver's-side window just moments earlier. Saanich police reported that the incident happened when the allegedly impaired driver lost control on a bend, crossed both lanes and ploughed into thick brush. The car narrowly missed two trees before plummeting down the steep bank of the pond, which Affleck believes was man-made but has not been used for some time.

Affleck did not know how deep the water was, but said it was deep enough to have swallowed the car by the time he and his wife arrived. They scrambled as close as they could to the men, who couldn't get themselves over the curving lip of the bank.

"I didn't want to get too close and get pulled in," Affleck said. "I didn't know how deep it was and I didn't want to be in the same situation."

He ran to the truck, looking for rope.

"I didn't have anything like that, but I do carry jumper cables because I own a towing company. So I grabbed the jumper cables and made them into a big loop so that they could grab a hold of them, and we hiked them up the bank and wrapped them in blankets."

When police got to the scene, they noted the driver showed signs of intoxication and transported him to the police station for breath samples. Blood-alcohol readings of .19 and .17 were registered, both more than double the legal limit of .08.

Further, the driver had only a learner's licence and did not have a qualified driver in the car with him, as required by law. He was ticketed for that offence, given an administrative driving prohibition and a 24-hour suspension, and has been scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 27.

Police said that without Affleck and Blashko "the outcome of this event would most certainly have been a grim report."

In a further twist, Affleck ended up being asked to use his own tow truck to pull the Intrepid out of the water.

Plane Crash!

Around 11 am on Sunday, a small 2 seat plane, piloted by a student and instructor, crashed into a clump of trees in the back yard of a house in Prospect Heights Ill. The 2 had non-life threatening injuries but the plane was a mess, and to add to the mess, it was in a bad spot and many of the trees had to be removed in order to get it out. Apparently, the home owner was very nice and understanding, quite surprising considering this is a nice tree lined area and these were older healthy trees. Fries towing was dispatched to the scene and determined that the trees needed to be removed. A tree service was called out and the work began. The pictures explain the rest. Very nice Job! Thank you Paul (Jr. & Sr.) for hooking me up!
