Three people who were walking down the street when they were hit with flying debris in Midtown are recovering Thursday morning.

the car crash that involved a tow truck Wednesday night was not the main concern for paramedics who responded to the scene.

Their first priority were the three people who were in the right place at the wrong time: walking on the sidewalk when debris from the accident struck them.

Around 11:15 p.m., a tow truck and a minivan collided in the middle of the intersection at Austin and Webster.

Both drivers told police they thought they had a green light.

The tow truck hit a light pole.

According to police, equipment from the wrecker vehicle flew off of it, striking the pedestrians.

One of them remains in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital, and the other two pedestrians were also taken.

Police said the driver of the minivan was also taken to the hospital.

Wrecker-Minivan Crash Injures Driver, 3 Bystanders

Doctors Believe Head Wound Victim May Be Brain Dead

POSTED: 8:56 am CST November 10, 2005

UPDATED: 10:06 am CST November 10, 2005

HOUSTON -- Three people standing on a sidewalk and a driver were injured after a tow truck slammed into a minivan near downtown Houston, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

The people on the sidewalk were struck by debris that was thrown into the air when the tow truck struck a traffic signal pole after colliding with the minivan on Austin Street at Webster Street at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Witnesses told police the tow truck struck the van after it ran a red light. However, the tow-truck driver, Rolando Sherman, told police he wasn't speeding and thought he had a green light.

All of the victims were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Hospital officials said one of the victims, Stephen Morgan, was transported to the hospital in critical condition with a head wound. Officials told KPRC Local 2 that he is believed to be brain dead.

Lanta Jackson, who was standing next to Morgan when the crash happened, was treated for a broken arm and collarbone. She was listed in good condition.

Stuart Glover, also standing with Jackson and Morgan, suffered internal bleeding. He was listed in fair condition.

Yolanda Martinez, the driver of the van, suffered injuries to her neck. She was listed in good condition.

Sherman was not injured in the accident. Police ticketed him for running a red light. They have not said if other charges would be filed.
